2 1/2″ thick x 42″ wide x 8′ tall Claro Walnut entry door w/ cast bronze medallions. 3″ thick Claro slabs were sliced into book-matched, thick veneers, and reassembled over a core that includes 1 1/4″ of rigid insulation to create an energy efficient entry door, yet the weight, look and feel combine to insist that this door is made from solid timber slabs. The contrasting bottom rail of the door is Walnut stained, White Oak. We fabricated a wood “positive” for the bronze castings and turned it over to Artworks Foundry, in Berkeley, CA, to cast the solid bronze medallions, which we subsequently installed on-site after hanging the very heavy door.

Claro Walnut slab banquette table. The 2 1/2″ thick table was fabricated from a book-matched pair of slabs from the same tree as the entry door. It is supported by a cruciform wood pedestal mounted in a heavy steel base. Both the table and door received dark Walnut stain to match the tone of the surrounding Black Walnut woodwork, nevertheless, the indomitable character of Claro Walnut is impossible to hide.
